HOCKEY.

The championship matches under the axispices of the Hockey Association were continued last Saturday, united defeated Auckland B by four'to one Auckland A beat University by three to one, and St. George's accounted for Pwteonby W six soals to live. In the third grade Auckland checked Epsom's hitherto unbeaten record, winning by one goal. SENIORSAUCKLAND A y. UNIVERSITY. Played on ZN'oi l "round, Kemuera, and, after a fine exhibition of hockey, the red and blacks proved victorious. 'Varsity were first away irom-the bully, and quickly invaded the Auckland territory, but bad snooting lost several chances of scoring. A succession of bullies brought relief to the reds. A fine piece of work by the 'Varsity forwards placed Auckland's goal in danger. A free hit -brought relief to the reds, and. play was removed to neutral territory. At this stage 'Varsity were doing most of tiie attacking ,and playiug splendidly. Another Uash by 'Varsity seemed to rouse the reds. The vanguard opened out their piay, and the backs rising to the occasion, gave one of the best exhibitions seen here this season. They swooped down upon the 'Varsity goal in a succession of passes, but their opponents' defence was sound. At last Auckland came through, anil KUiott scored. Varsity then assumed the offensive, but the Auckland backs repelled the boarders, and the forwards were again goal-hunting, without success. Several line efforts of the blues almost culminated in a score, but their shooting was unsuccessful, and fine work by the Auckland backs' cleared —Auckland 1, University 0. When the game re-started, ■Varsity were again first away, but the attack was only of brief duration, being well cleared by the Auckland backs. An attack of the rods .was well repulsed in the nick of time. Give and take play followed, but Auckland were not to be denied, ana some clever hitting resulted in Mather scoring. 'Varsity rallied, and, taking the leather well into Auckland circle, looked dangerous; but a smart kick by the custodian saved. Auckland reversed the attack, and a continued bombardment by the Auckland forwards was well stopped and cleared by the 'Varsity backs Auckland were away again, and from a long pass across the field, the ball was nicely centred, and BrookeSmith notched a fine goal. 'Varsity retaliated, and indulging in some fine combined work, regained the Auckland Circle. This time Rands was successful in finding the uprights. Both teams were doing their share oft the attacking, but the defence was too sound, and a fast, open game ended without any further score. Mr. E. Manaen gave every satisfaction as referee. ST. GEORGE'S (6) V. PONSONBY (5). Played at Remuera on Saturday, with nine men a-side. The same -was a very fast one, and some interesting, and at times exciting, play was witnessed. At half-time the scores were: St. George's o. Ponsonby 1. In the second spell I'onsonlJJ- rallied, and after several vigorous onslaughts succeeded iv increasing their score by 4 goals, St. George's adding 3 goals to their score, and the game finished up: St. George's 6, Ponsonby 5. Mr Price as referee gave every satisfaction. AUCKLAND V. UNITED. This match was played on the Remuera ground on Saturday, and resulted in a win for United by 4 goals to 1. The winners showed good form, both in the rear and forward division, and were more than a match for their opponents, who, however, must be given credit for a very stubborn defence. Iv the forwards they played one man short, which handicapped them very badly. Prom the bully the ball was secured by United, Barry passing out to Doyle, who dribbled down the line, and centred accurately. Bad shooting by United resulted in the leather going outside the posts. From the resulting bully United initiated another attack; this time, however, tue Auckland backs nipped it in the bud and cleared. Play hung about the centre of the field for a time, United at last working it towards their opponents' goal line, and from a scramble in Auckland's circle, M-firpetti drew first blood for United. After this Auckland livened up a little, and good hitting by the full backs enabled their forwards to initiate a passing rush, from which Armstrong, getting a good pass from Murdoch, shot a good goal, making the scores level. Shortly afterwards the whistle sounded for half time, without any alt ration in the score. The second spell started with a strong attack by the United forwards, and an excellent centre by Doyle enabled Barry to notch United's second goal. From this on United held the upper hand, and had Auckland busy on the defence; time after time was tlie ball sent by long hitting to the United backs, -only to be returned by good play by Sherriffs and Hussey. Chiefly through, good centring by Doyle, two more goals were added by Barry, making the score United 4, Auckland 1. and the gar.se endtd without any further alteration to the score. Mr Larkin refereed, and gave every satisfaction. ■

JUNIORS. College Rifles (5) v. Ponsonby (2).----(Played at Remuera.) —Tile match was a good contested game, and was fast from start to finish. From the "bully-off" the College had their opponents on the defensive, the combination of the College and passing of their forwards resulting in Kesketh scoring first blood for his side. Fonsonby then livened up, and good play by Corbridge registered the first goal for Ponsonby. Soon after the College took play flown the field, where C. Bagnall scored second goal. After the bully-off a forward rush betwepn Hesketh and C. Biagnall resulted in the former scoring College's third goal, and the first spell ended: College 3 goals, Tonsonby 1 goal. In the second half of the game both sides played well, but the College combination proved too much for their opponents. By smart forward rushes Rutherford and Hesketb secured a goal each. Ponsonby then retaliated .smartly. Sand, taking play into College quarters, Allison succeeded in shooting Ponsonby's second goal, and the Same ended: College Rifles 5, Ponsonby " Mr Goldwater refereed satisfactorilyADCkland v.
