PROFESSIONAL RUNNING.

VAX BEATS McI^ACHLA-N.

The match, between B. B. Day, of Great Britain, and L. C. McLachlan,, of >ew Zealand, for the professional running cnam piomehip of New Zealand, over three <ns tances, 130 yds, 175 yds, and 300 yds, Pr°""*T ed by Mr K. Naylor, toot place on l> oml " v Cricket Ground on Saturday afternoon last, and resulted in a victory for the nisinamed, who won the 175 yards and -W yards tests, while McLachlan was successful in the 130 yards. The weather was line, but the track was heavy owing to tne recent rains. Nevertheless the tim€S ,..?," corded , for the different distances were little short of marvellous, as in the 130 yaras McLachlan was credited with running the distance two yards ontside even time, wane in the 175 yards Day ran the distance in 17 L'-os, which is just a fraction better than even time. While there is no reason to doubt the accuracy of the timekeepers (oi whom there were four), it seems a pity that the distances were not properly surveyed after the match, as if everything was in order, the times hoisted by both men (taking into consideration the heavy going) must take rank with the best ever recorded in Auckland. In the first test, the 130 yards, Day hung a trifle on his mark when the pistol fired, McLachlan on the other hand being quick to get going. Twenty yards from ,the tape Day was almost on terms with" McLachlan, but he did not finish with the dash with which he has generally been credited, and suffered defeat by a foot, in the fast time of 13 l-se. In the second test, 300 yards, McLachlan was again quickest to get going, and he made the running till about thirty yards from the post, when Day shot out, and finishing strongly, won by "four yards, in 31 1-os, which for a straightaway course is a biff performance. In the final test, 175 yards, both men left the mark together. McLachlan. who begins very quickly, holding a slight advantage till within a short distance of the tape, when Day, finishing with a great burst of speed, caught and passed him, eventually getting the verdict by three yards, in the phenomenal time of 17 2-os, and winning tne match and purse. In addition to the match a boys' championship of 50 yards, under 15. and a novice handicap of 75 yards, was run off. V. Cornaga winning the former, and F. Tate the latter. Messrs H. W. Wilson and W.
