QUARTERLY CUSTOMS RETURNS.
LARGE INCREASE OF REVENUE.
A return compiled by the Customs Department shows that the total receipts for the quarter ending on June ;fOth last to £205,175 14/2, as against £1ti2,552 12/9 for the corresponding period last year, an increase of £42,322 15/. The Customs duty amounted to £137,8(33 12/, compared with £145.!IO1 , r >/7, an increase (if £41,872 6/5. The excise duty amounted to £225 2/3, being an increase of £39 13/6. The receipts included consolidated revenue (£190,(i!)8 IG/8) and loral re-venue £007(1 17/6). The receipts were increased by tbe Chinese poll-tax by £1600. and £5876 14/7 was received .is beer duty. The gold rfcvcuue amounted to £P. 040 11/3, the larsest contributor bping Ohinemuri with £1305 18/7>. The Shipping and Seamen's Act yielded £3040. The duty collected Included the following:—Spirits, £31.620 6AO; tobacco. £:!2.04fl 12/8: sugar £33,271 18/3: goods ad valorem. £G6.78S 4/1: goods by weight, £11.864 15/9; preferential duty, £4444 4/5.
The Customs duties collected at the port nf Auckland for the month of June last amounted to £54,4£)7. as compared with £50 73S for the corresponding month last year, au increase of £37M>. The beer duty amounted to £1800, which is an increase of £220. There was a falling off in the export of precious metals, the figures being: —June, 1007: Gold. 11,6700z, valued at £4-4,372; silver. 01.231-oz. valued at £9342. June, 1908: Gold. 16,3760z, valued at £(>5,944; silver, 7".5760z, valued at £7881. The exports of produce, etc., show an tncma.ee in the aggregate. The fignres, with the corresponding period last ypnr in purent-hpsis. are given below: — Butter, 7234ewt, valued at £35,869 (255icwt, £1350); cheese.
