GASLIGHT SPORTS.
. The Auckland Athletic Clnb's 100 yards i handicap, postponed from Wednesday evening, was decided last night. About 1500 spectators were present, and great interest was manifested in the appearance of B. R. Day, the Irish champion. In his heat he was giving starts up to 13 yards, and was only defeated by a few inches, after a fine race. A total of 127 out of the 150 entrants accepted, and the judging machine was used with excellent results. The second round resulted:—First heat: S. Beer, lliyds, 1. Time, 10s. Second heat: G. Mattocks. 12* yds. 1. Time, 10s. Third heat: R. Lea. SHy-ds. 1. Time, 10s. Fourth heat: H. Chitty, 9£yds, 1. Time, 10 l-ss. Fifth heat: G. Hirst, 10yds, 1. Time, 10s. Final heat: R. Lea, 1; S. Beer, 2; H. Chitty, 3; G. Hirst, 4; G. Mattocks, 5. Lea and Beer went to the front when half the distance had been covered, the former winning by a foot. Time, 10s.
