GREAT HURRICANE.
CARM.INES DEVASTATED.
280 LIVES LOST. SCHOONER LOST WITH Ali HANDS. (By Cable.—Press Association.— (Received 10.27 aja.) SYDNEY, this day. News has been received that the Caroline Group (belonging to Germany) has been devastated by a hurricane. Many of the smaller islands have been swept by terrific seas. The island of Ulie had most of its native inhabitants washed away. It is estimated that 260 persons perished in the Group. Native food is scarce. A schooner foundered, and most of the crew were drowned. Twenty persons were killed at Halief Island by the hurricane.
