Among them were Bishop Julius, Mr. Wigram, M.L.C., Mr. Justice Chapman, Messrs. Association, Charitable Aid Board, Salvation Army, Art Society, Yorkshire Society, Selwyn County Council, Lyttelton and Ashburton boroughs and many others. Handsome floral tributes were forwarded from all quarters, including wreaths from the Government and the Premier. The weather is fine, and there was a large gathering of settlers at Coalgate. The Government was not officially represented, owing to Ministers not being able to get down from Wellington, but an appreciative telegram was received from Sir Joseph Ward, expressing regret and sympathy. The body was conveyed to Coalgate in a mortuary van on a special train. The cemetery is four miles from Coalgate.
