NATIONAL DEFENCE LEAGUE. A public meeting under the auspices of the National Defence League was held last evening at St. Mark's Hall, Remuera, the attendance being fair. Sir Robert Lockhart presided. Addresses explanatory of the League's objects were during the evening delivered by Dr. T. Hope Lewis and Messrs ■Murdoch and Taylor, the speakers exhorting their hearers to assist the movement, and so help to promote a national spirit, interspersed among the sjfeech.es were a number of- patriotic songs, the contributors being Messrs. Bagstrom, W. R. Garland, and E. Browne. At the conclusion of the meeting a number of new members were enrolled on the Remuera branch of tha League.

The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Good Intent Lodge, 4369, was held in the lodge-room, Cook-street Hall, on Monday evening. Bro. W. M. Radford, N.G., presided. The election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follows: —Bro. W. M. Radford, G.M.; Bro. C. W. Wise, N.G.: Bro. C. W. Mirfin, V.G.; and Bro. ... Stewart, E.S. One candidate was initiated, and five were proposed for initiation at the next lodge meeting. The membership now stands at 408, and the funds exceed £8000, the receipts for the evening totallins £240.
COURT VICTORIA, No. 6699, A.0.F.,. ' DEVONPORT. The half-yearly meeting of the abow court was held on the 25th inst., Bro. Timewell, C.R., presiding. There was a very large attendance, and great interest taken in the proceedings. It was decided to pay the doctor's medical fee for the widows of all deceased members, so as to ensure them free madical attendance. 0n« new member was initiated, and one candidate proposed. Tbe election of officer* resetted as followsr—C.R., Bro. Ballai_> ty.ne; 5.C.8., Bro. Biddle; S.W., Bro. Brewer; J.W., Bro. Piesse; 5.8., Bro. Spenser J. 8.. Bro. Rev. Evershed;" secretary, Bro. Osborne (re-elected); treasurer, Bro. Hoverd (re-elected); ' auditor, Bro. Piesse; delegates to district meeting, Bros. Timewell, Piesse, and Hoverd. The officers were impressively installed into their respective offices, P.CR.'s Bros. Napier and Strude acting as presenting officers. Dr. Campbell was elected third medical officer to the court. A committee waa set up to arrange for holding the -22nd anniversary in August nest. The receipt* of the evening amounted to £131, and the court was closed in the usual manner.
PONSONBY LITERARY SOCIETY.
The weekly meeting of the Ponsorthr Literary and Debating Society was held. 1» the Leys Institute on Monday evening last. There was a good attendance of members, and a most interesting debate took place oa the question "Is Imperialism for the Benefit of the Human Race?" Mr Northcraft opened in the affirmative, and Mr McMatfc followed in the negative. Animated criticism followed, and after the openers "had replied, votes were taken as to the merits of the speakers, and the merits of tin question. The former vote was in favour . °S J_ r Northcroft, and the latter In favour of the affirmative side of the question. ;
FRENCH CLUB.
The ordinary meeting of the Freseh Clnb was held in St P&ai's seboolr-ora yesterday evening, Mr M, R, Boenfve-pre-siding The main feature of the evening was the performance of the comedy "Un Quaxtier Tranquille," by theirs of Mdlle. Bouillon's school. The cast of characters was as foflows:— Mmc Ma_garni, Miss J. Dalzelle; Eudosie Cieopatre, Miss Frances Wilson; Mme. de I'EnS .'S lat '^ Ml^ s . Evel yn Harvey; Anastasie, Mdlle. B. Bouillon; Mdlle de I'Aquarelle Miss Una Buddie; Mdlle. Olympe Zoe de Mont-Paxnasse, Miss Dorothy Nieol- MdUe Doremi, Miss Roth Spencer; M. Vacairme" v.,»__" Boeuf Y € - M uch enthusiasm and ability was displayed by the young people, and the accent in several cases wcrold not do discredit to native-born French. Mdlle. Bouillon was loudly applauded at the close of the entertainment for the splendid work of her pupils. ' A short dialogue, "La Petite Pille Qui Vent Parartre (Savante," was ably rendered by Misses P ■Wilson and B. Chnrton. A debate as to ithe colonialls over-indulgence in sport was also continned. No less than 14 new members were elected laft evening, showing tbat as regards numbers, the club is on a thoroughly firm footing.
