AUCKLAND CENTRAL MISSION.
A concert, in connection with the (Auckland Central Mission, was held yesterday evening in conclusion of the annual festival. A large programme was provided, and was much appreciated by the audience. The hall was beautifully decorated with palms and greenery for the occasion. Mr. J. W. Johnstone, musical director of the mission, presided as manager of the concert.
The orchestra's renderings of " Tannhauser " and " Norwegian Dances/ Nos. 1 and 2, were loudly applauded. Valuable assistance was given to the orchestra by Miss Myrtle Bbuntree, Miss V. Henderson, L.A_B., and the Lyric Quartette. Mr. Aspinall feelingly rendered the song, " I Seek for Thee in every Flower," and, with Mr. J. W. Ryan, the duet, "Watchman, What of the Night?" The latter gentleman also sang " The Mighty Deep," which called forth much aplause. The Lyric Quartette were loudly encored for their songs, "' Musketeers," " Eileen Alannab," and " A Stream of Silver Moonshine." Miss M. Rountree was heard to much advantage in "Villanelle " and " The Wreath," and Miss Henderson also scored a distinct success in Chopin's "Berceuse." Two interesting recitals were given by Mr. A. McElwain. The accompanists were Mrs. I. Clarke and Miss Henderson. At the conclusion of the entertainment, Mr. Hemery, acting-superintendent, sincerely thanked those friends who had so materially assisted in bringing the festival to such a successful conclusion.
The prospectus of the United Service Co-operative Hotel Company, Limited, appeared in our last evening's issue. This company has been formed for the purpose of acquiring a site at South Kensington, and erecting thereon a firstclass hotel, to be worked upon co-opera-tive principles, giving, as regards a hotel, privileges similar to those given to their shareholders by the various cooperative stores. The primary object is to cater for members of Pa-liament, and of the Indian and Colonial Legislative Councils, commissioned officers of the navy, army, and auviliary forces, and members of the superior grades of the Civil Service, on the Home, Indian, and Colonial establishments, and for their families. The capital is fixed at £225,----000 in £1 shares. Prospectuses and forms of applications may be obtained at the Bank of Australasia. There is an epidemic of measles at Norfolk Island. In response to a request from the Educational Institute, the Education Board has decided to suggest to the chief inspector when for the future he recommends the selection of candidates for appointment as teachers to give due consideration to the length of service and departmental certificate, in conjunction with the grade of applicants, as agreed upon by the inspectors.
Runners are notified that entries close at 9 o'clock this evening for the 75yds Novice Handicap to be run on Saturday afternoon in conjunction with the DayMcLachlan match. Entries must be left at 17 Coombes' Arcade.
Messrs. J. W. J. Marks and H. Moody have been selected as representatives for the employers, and Messrs. A. "White and E. Flanagan for the Union, to meet on a special conciliation board in order to deal with the slaughtermen's dispute —several clauses of which still remain to be settled. This matter partly affects the local shop trade.
The second annual ball in connection with the Waitemata Boating Club will be held in Ihe Royal Albert Hall next Friday trezdsg.
