The ferry steamers on the Kojctheote service "were gaily decked with blurting in honour of the marriage of Miss __ Hawkins,. of Birkenhead, to Mr Frank Townserfl, at Nbrthcote, this afternoon. Captain T. W. _kH_anfi_vil_e, who has heen transferred from the Bank of New Zealand at. Thames to the Bank in Auckland, has been elected to the command of the No. 2 Natives. Captain Sommerville.. waa till recently Adjutant of the No. 2 (Hauraki) Battalion, and on resigning that position he was transferred to the Active Unattached List.
Mr, __' V. Daldy, of the Bank of Nerwi Zealand -staff, who has been transferred from Paeroa to Te Awarantn, was entertained prior to his departure from Paeroa by members of the West Football Club, of which he had been secretaary. Mr. (captain of the senior team) presided, and on behalf oi the members presented Mr. Daldy wii— a handsome travelling case, on whitwas a silver plate suitably engrased. Another veteran of the Maori "Wax ■has passed away in England in the person of Colonel Lowry, late of the ; l_Vta_ Regime-fc. He served wij_i hi_ regiment as captain, and passed through many trying times, especially when engaged in transport service. His wife, who was well known to old itecklahders as Miss Bessie __ere, predeceased I him several years ago. He leaves two I sons, both in the axmy.
• Dr. Lyman B. Sperry, whose name, during the last few months has_ become ahno_t as familiar in Australia as it is in America, will arrive in Anckland jon Saturday, Jaly 2*"th. He will deliver ' series of lectures to men under the ans- , pices of the Yonng Men's C3___-ti___ Association, commencing Sunday afternoon, July. 28th., Dr. Sperry has become famlous, hath as a writer and lecturer, on subjects of vital importance to men. The Press notices in Australia have beeSYof the most f'awurable character, and his lectures in every case have been. largely attended.
In reply to a letter of sympathy from Mr __ W. Hogg, M.H-K-, the Hon. *W. Halt Jones writes: — "I have had a rather trying _mc, hut am thankful to say that I am now improving. .... I am advised on all hands to take a rest, and I feel that I must do so. I bave been very pleased with the many communica.tions of sympathy and good wishes which I have received from all parts of the colony. They haye_ cheered mc at a critical time. I shall never forget the kindness and goodwill shown to mc, and if rfc is so willed that I may continue my Ministerial work, it "will encourage mc to do wbat I can to retain the respect and esteem of those to whom I refer."
