LICENSING COMMITTEES.
j PABXELL. I The quarterly/ meeting of the Parnell ! Licensing Committee was held yesterday. ; Present: Messrs B." W. Dyer, S.M. (chairman), A. Clements, W. Gavin, J. Lumpkin, J. McCabe, and W. Thomas. Transfers. — Transfers of licences were granted from J. R. D. Baker to J. C. Griflln (Alexandra Hotel, Parneli), and from Enuis Parrie to Thos. McHaig (Ellerslie Hotel). Newmarket Hotel.—An unfavourable police report upon the Kewmarket Hotel stated that twice, on May 18 and on September 3, the licensee had been convicted of breaches of the Act, on the first occasion for selling liquor to an intoxicated person, and on the second for exposing liquor for sale dnring prohibited honre. —Mr McVeagh (for John Glllander, the licensee), asked the committee to refrain from action, as since the last conviction, when the licensee was fined the maximum sum, and an endorsement of his license ordered the house had been well conducted.—Sergeaist Moore etated that a man had heen pnt Into the house by the owners for the purpose of eeeing that it was well conducted.—The Chairman remarked that It was evident that a change was desirable, and, although tile committee did not wish to act harshly, they hoped that a change of licensees wonld be made befc-re the next quarterly meeting. — Mr McYeagb asked that an addendum be made to the committee's decision to the effect i that in the event of a satisfactory police report,at the end of three months a change need not be made.—After consulting, the Chairman said that although they were not unanimous, the majority of the committee favoured the jsrantinjr of Mr McVeagh's request, under the distinct understanding that no ontside assistance be called in, and that the house should be condncted to the satisfaction of the police, who were directed to keep it under strict surveillnnce during the next three months. Mr D.vor warned the licensee that this was hie- last chance.
