Among the passengers for Sydney by tie Mokoia last evening were Mr J. W. Beattie, of Hobart, wno has been on a visit to the Solomon and Norfolk Islands, and Mr Alex. Morton, director of the Hobart llnseum and Botanical Gardens, who has been ■mniriT.g a holiday visit in New Zealand. Both gentlemen are returning to Hobart.
Mr. P. Wilding, the well-known tennis player, left the steamer Paparoa at Hobart to go to Melbourne to take part in the Victorian Championships. Mr. Wilding is expected to return to the colony in eight or ten days' time. He will endeavour to bring another champion, Brooks, with him to heighten interest iii the Exhibition contest.
2fews has been received from Brisbane of the death of Edgar J. Byrne, familiarly known as "Bobby Byrne," aged 64 years. Mr Byrne, who arrived in the early days, was one of the best known, and most popular personalities of tjneensland, and by his geniality and kjndheartedness endeared himself to all. •The well-known Brisbane "Courier" was founded by him, also the Queensland ♦-"Punch." and "Figaro," of which he has been proprietor and editor for the past 30 years.
