A Knitted Petticoat.

A pair of bone knitting needles are required, and about Soz. of wool. The petticoat is knitted in strips, which is more convenient for the worker than when knitted in larger portions. The strips are knitted in squares of alternate purl and plain—that is, a plain square must come over a purl one, and so on, beginning with the border. The number of stitches cast on for a strip varies according to. the wool and wishes of the wearer. If very thick wool be used, not so mauy can be cast on as for thinner wool, as it becomes rather too heavy and inconvenient for working, but 27 stitches is a very good number.

Begin with the border. Ist row: Plain knitting. 2nd row: Purl. 3rd row: Plain. 4th row: Slip 1, * knit 2 together, knit 4, make 1, knit 1, make 1, knit 4, sup 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitched over, repeat from * and knit last stitch plain. sth row: Purl. 6th row: Same as 4th. 7th row: Plain. Sth row: Purl. 9th row: Plain. 10th row: Same as 4th. 11th row: Purl. 12th row: Same as 4th. 13th row: Plain. 14th row: PurL 15th row: Plain. 16th row: Plain.

This ends the border. Now work alternately 3 purl and 3 plain for 3 rows, then reverse to 3 plain and 3 purl, for length of strip required. It is best to narrow the strips as they approach the waist by decreasing a stitch here and there. When finished join strips together and sew into a shaped band.
