SCIENTIFIC TRAWLING.

A NEW GIANT CRAB. The second deep-sea trawling expedition organised at Sydney by Professor W. A. Haswell, of Sydney University, took place on the 26th and 27th alt., in the steamer Woy Woy. The soundings were taken about 35 miles due east of Sydney Heads- In the first attempt a bucket dredge was used, and some 1200 fathoms of rope payed out. Hauling the dredge aboard again proved a difficult task, but after about three hours' winding this was accomplished. Several new shells were brought to the surface in the ooze, the temperature of which was found to bo 57deg, that of the sea water at the surface Deing about lOdeg higher. In a second descent with a larger trawl much better results were procured. One hundred and fifty specimens of a previously very rare sea-urchin (Porscidaris elegans) were gathered in, and numbers cif live abyssal fish (Macrurus). Two specimens of c. remarkable deep sea urchin (Phormosoma), p>jth flexible shell, were secured, in addition to several deep-sea beche-de-mer of Holothiiria.ns. A valuable prize was a new and gigantic crab (Latreillopsis). Professor Haswell was accompanied by a party of science students from the University.
