Instead of continuing in their former policy of futile armed risings, the Anne- ! nians in the Caucasus are nightly kid- | napping their opponents and trying them I belore midnight at vehmgerichtes held in the woods, consisting of masked villagers, and all are condemned and hanged i from trees. i [Vehmgerichtes were mediaeval tribunals which flourished in Germany, and chiefly in Westphalia, in the 14th and 15th centuries. The sessions were open . for the adjudication of civil matters, but j secret when persons accused of murder, ! robbery, heresy, -witchcraft, etc., were \ summoned. The masking was common at the secret tribunal.]
