THE MELBOURNE STRIKE.
1000 MEN APrECTED. EMPLOYERS PAUSE BEFORE ACTION. MELBOURNE, Kovember 1. The strike of men in the building trades commenced this morning. Many lof the men did noi turn up for work, and others came at eight instead of half-past I seven. They weiv informed that their I services were not required. Work is at a standstill on many build- | ings. A good many of the carpenters adhered to the old agreement, and are still working. The Trades Hall officials report that fully 50 builders and contractors outside Jof the Builders' Association have conceded the men's demands. ' (Received 9.55 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. It is estimated that not more than one thousand men are affected by the strike \in the building trades. No efforts are i being made by the contractors to fill the places of the strikers, and probably nothing will be done for a day or two. i Received 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Both, sides are firm. The pickets ; watched the various contracts with the : object of inducing men seeking work not 'to accept it, but their services were not ■ required. Neither Government nor Metropolitan Board wants are affected, these "jobs" continue at the rates fixed iby the master builders.
