DEFENCELESS ST. HELENA.
Withdrawal of tlie Garrison. i (Received 7.5 a.m.) LONDON, November 1. The garrison has been withdrawn from ! the island of Saint Helena. The island- ' ers are indig-nant, and declare that they , will be ruined and will be defenceless | against invasion. [The normal British garrison at St. Helena numbers about 500, including 100 local volunteers., while the non-military population is about 3300. The island, i which i= about 800 miles from Ascension i Island, and 1200 from the west coast of | Africa, is an Admiralty coaling station, and is largely resorted" to by the Cape J and West African squadron. Its strate- j qic value would naturally suggest a danger in the withdrawal of the garrison. ; The inhabitants would also, of course, i suffer considerably in loss of trade by j the removal of nearly one-sixth of their population*—a fact which explains theii i use of the word "ruined."! _ j:
