EDUCATION DECISION.

A Government Appeal.

LONDON, October 15. It v/as officially announced to-day that the Government had decided to appeal to the House of Lords against the West Riding judgment (rendering illegal the taxation of tbo. ratepayer for sectarian education), with a. view to clearing up numerous points of difficulty at the earliest moment. . Mr. Asquith. speaking on Saturday, said that whether or not there was an appeal, or whether or not the appeal succeeded, nothing could modify the Government's intention to give legislative effect to the. first principle of the Education Bill, namely, thnt public control must be absolutely unfettered and complete from top to bottom of all education given at the public charge in the English elementary schools. ,

At a great meeting held on Saturday the Roman Catholics of Manchester resolved to resist the bill to the utmost as destructive of religious equality.
