NAVAL RETRENCHMENT.
AN IMPORTANT DECISION. BATTLESHIPS FOR THE RESERVE. LONDON, October 15. "'The Standard" makes the statement that the Admiralty, from motives of economy, intend before 1007 to place six vessels of the Majestic type and two of the Formidable type in reserve with nucleus crews abroad; as well as eight vessels of the Royal Sovereign type in reserve without crew?.
The men liberated are to go to strengthening the crows of the torpedo flotillos, and are to live in barracks.
Newspaper statements indicated that some reduction was to be made in the Mediterranean fleet, owing to the entente with France, but the drafting of vessels thence and elsewhere, to Home waters was intended to strengthen the squadron.
•'The Standard" itself anticipates an official denial of its information, or a modification of the intention now alleged to lay up battleships.
[The Majestic, class of six vessels bolongs to the ISO 3-04 programme, and the Formidable class to the 1897-98 programme. The Majesties have a tonnage of 15,000, and have four 12in and twelve 6in guns. The same figures apply to the Formidables, which, however, have differences in detail.]
