ALLEGED THEFTS AT AVONDALE.

James Adams, alias McCarthy, pleaded not guilty at tUo Police Court today to a charge of stealing a quantity of oaten hay, value o/, belonging to George Sanson, at Avondale, between January. 25th and 31st. Mr Sanson stated that Adams rented a house belonging to him at Avondale, and when the hay was missed from a drying shed in an adjoining paddock the accused's house was searched?, with the result that the hay was found. Adams admitted having possession of the hay, but said he was only using it temporarily in the house, and he intended to return it. He was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. A second charge against the accused was that of breaking and entering the dwelling of Joseph Butler at Avondale between February 4th and Gth, a billy-can and *a towel, value 4/. Mr Butler said that a cottage which he rented at Avondale was broken into while he was away, and the towel and billy stolen. A billy produced by the police was exactly like the missing one, but he could not swear positively to it. To enter the house the thief had burst open a back dpor; which was padlocked. Evidence wis given to 9how that the billy produced by the police was found, smashed up, in the flue of a colonial oven, , (Proceeding.)
