FIRE AT GREYMOUTH.

GREYMOUTH. t-his day,

The brick sheds at the Brunner Company's mine, together with the whole of the machinery, was destroyed by fire this morning; other buildings a-djoining were considerably damaged, and Craig's grocery stock suffered greatiy through hasty removal. The loss is a very considerable one. The insurances arc not ascertainable here. A lajge number of mcii will be thrown out of work for a month or six weeks.

DENTAL EXAMINATION RESULTS.

The Wanganui Garrison Band returned from the Auckland contest by the mid-day train, and met with a great rpception. They marched to Cook's Gardens, where over two thousand people asscEclfed. and addjresfj's oij welcome were delivered by the Mayor and Mr. Remington, member for Raigitikei. The. conductor, Mr. Crichton. was presented with a handsome gold medal from the citizens.

WANGANUI RIFLE MEETING.

Tlie Wanganui Rifle Association's meeting on Thursday and Friday will constitute a record, and marksmen from all parts of the North Island competing. The new range at. Putiki, whjeh was recently acquired, will be used for the first time at this meeting.

A YOUNG MAN DROWNED

NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday

A yo-ung man named Kastar Amries, of descent, employed on the new reservoir works, was drowned in the Waiwaikaiho River yesterday. The body was found to-day, and an inquest will tske place this afternoon.

FLAXBOURNE ESTATE. , *

BLENHEIM.. Monday

In the Flaxbourne case, to-day, the. whole of the sitting was"taken up with the addresses of Messrs Sim and Skerrett. counsel respectively for the respondent. Minister and the claimants. Mr Justice Cooper said that the Court will reassemble on Wednesday afternoon, when he would intimate if a decision had been arrived at. He remarked that whereas the amount of claim was £335.000. the highest valuation on the side of the Crown was £146,000. Thus the Court had to consider a difference of nearly £ 200.000.

RAILWAY COLLISION.

INVES.CARGILL, Monday.

The train to the Bluff came.into collision with a shunting engine diverted from a- siding line through the points being o.pen. The view of the drivers was obstructed by a line of waggons, anl. although both did all they could, to stop, the engines cam* togclbe? shoulderwise. the left cylinder of each being destroyed, and the cowcatcher gear twisted. It was fortunate that "the shunter was not a length further on. The passengers were a bit shaien.

DROWNED WHILE BATHING

INTEEVARGILL, Monday.

On Sunday afternoon Robert Shed- ■ dan. from the Wangantii district, was rlrowneri while bathing in the Mataura, above Gore. He could not swim, and was splashing- in shallow water, while his mates crossed the river. On looking back, they saw him sink.

David Berrie. cook of the steamer Manaroa. was charged with assaulting a seaman. Wm. Matthews, with a meat cleaver. He was committed for trial.
