THE AUSTRALIAN MAILS.
LONDON, February 9. ' The "Daily Chronicle," commenting ov { Mr. Reid's attitude regarding the mail service, says: The condition of the mail service is very unfortunate, commercially , and Imperially. Mr. Reid's precarious J majority is the reason for his declining i to move against the wishes of a section of his supporters. These viiings, coupled with the bill proposing further disabiii- \ ties on British shipping, enable one to understand Sir Thomas Sutherland's statement on December 13 that the P. & 0. Company might be compelled to divert its steamers from Austc&lia.
