DEATH OF MR. J. A. DOBSON.
A gentleman well-known in mining circles died at Woodside Private. Hospital, Burleigh-street, about 11.30 o'clock last evening, namely, James Allen Dobson. The deceased was a native of Scotland, and one of that hardy band of miners who followed the gold from Victoria to Otago, and then up to the Hauraki fields. He was successful as a miner on the Victoria goldfields, and when Otago broke out was found amongst the pioneers working on the Shotover and the Molyneaux. When the Thames and Coromandel fields were giving such excellent yields in the early days Mr Dobson once more followed the <rold and was manager of the Bismark claim at the Tokatea. When the Kuaotunu field first opened the old miner was again in evidence as manager of the Mariposa, and even at the advanced age of over three score years and ten Air Dobson was until quite recently at work on the Great Barrier trying to solve the problem of successfully treating the tailings. At length lung trouble set in and Mr Dobson finally went to the private hospital, where his wanderings ended last night. The deceased was a married man. but his wife and one son predeceased him, leaving now one son arid one daughter. Mr Dobson bore a well-merited character for integrity, and was recognised as a man who, in mining matters, as well as everything else,_ could be thoroughly trusted. His death will therefore be deeply regretted by all who knew him.
