Major-General Babington. wlio is visiting the thermal district, returns to Wellington to-morrow. Mr Revt Royle. representative of Mr J. C. Williamson in New Zealand, went South to-day in the Takapuna. The Et» Rev. Moneignor O'Reilly, wlio has been on a brief visit to Auckland, returns to the Thames (his evening. Mr J. W. J. Preston, who was on the stali' of the l.'nion S.S. Co., has been appointed manager of the Burnie (Tas.) oliice of the company. Mr J. D. McKeneic, of 'Wbangarei, has announced himself as a candidate for the Marsden scat, which is at present held by Mr F. Mander. M.ILR. Archdeacon Colo arrived from New Plymouth yesterday by the Takapuna. The liev. J. B. !>neyd also returned to Auckland yesterday by the Takapuna. Among it the recent visitors to Dargaville werp Mr T. P. Clark, engineer to the Waihi Gold Mining Company, and Mr C. C. Andersen, from Copenhagen, who is superintending the Installation of improved crushing machinery at the Waihi battery. These gentlemen arc making a tour of the North. After "doing" W'hangurei and the Bay of Islands, tacy return via the East Coast to Auckland. Mr P. Quinlan, the well-known hotelkeeper, has taken over the Thistle Hotel, in Auckland, from Mr Sumach, and Mr Lynch has returned to his old position as licensee of the Clarendon, which he had transferred to Mr Quinlan. Another hot-pi that has changed owners-aip is the Paexoa Hotel. Paeroa. which has been taken over by Mr E. F. Moriaxty. late of the Central Hotel, Dargaville. Mr li. llobbs. who at yesterday's meeting of the Education Board entered a protest against the action of the Board in the O'Donoghue case, will emphasise his protest by tendering his resignation before -the next meeting. Several., school committees have, we understand, already approached Mr Hobbs with a view to his contesting the vacancy thai his resignation will create, and it is probable that he will be a candidate. Mr St. John M'Guiro. eldest son of Mr Felix M'Guire, ex-M.H.R. for Hawera. and a well-known property-holder at Te Awainutu. died suddenly at his residence at Riverlea on, .Tliursday. A Xow Flylmouth paper records that Mr William Ks.ssett. one of Taranaki's oldest and most respected settlers, died at tie age of S9 on February 3. Mr Basaett, who landed in New Plymouth in IS4I. bore a fall share of the military risks of the timw;. for which he received tie New Zealand medal.
