WRECK OF A BARQUE.
IN THE BASS STRAITS. GEEW LASHES TO TEE RIGGING. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyrlgfot.) LAUNCESTON. February 8. The steamer Konookarra has arrived from Hobart, bringing 28 of the crew of the barque Mayfjeld, which was totally wrecked at Swan Island, Bass' Straits, on Sunday afternoon. The Mayfield left Geelong on February 2nd with 3000 tons of wheat for Queenstown. She was caught in a gale and driven ashore. Captain Roberts, seeing that there was no hope of saving the vessel, ran her ashore on a sandy beach, where she settled down in six fathoms of water. A portion of the crew landed, but when the boat returned for the remainder it was carried away to the east coast by the current and the heavy wind. The boat was picked up by the Konookarra, and those on the island were also taken off. The vessel was owned by Messrs. Shaw, Savill & Co., and was only insured for half her value. There is not the slightest chance of saving the vessel, or even of any salvage Captain Roberts states that it was blowing a whol« gale when the vessel struck. LATER The captain of the Mayfield says that the port lifeboat was got away* to the island after some difficulty, but the other boats w-ro smashed before being launched. The port lifeboat struck on the rocks in landing. On Monday the men who had landed tried to reach the ship with a whaleboat from the bghthouse, but the seas were too heavy, and they had to go back. At noon mi Monday the" port lifeboat took oft the chief mate and nine hands, •.eavmg six men and himself clingin<r to tho rigging. ° The boat made another attempt to reach tne vessel, but was carried away to the eastward. The weather moderated yesterday. and the whaleboat rescued the remainder afIT' o- ey u ad been lashed to the risgin* j for 3, hours. During that time the waves were braking over the vessel, and they suffered torrcbiy from cold and hunger.
