CONSUMPTION IN WELLINGTON
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. That there are about 150 known cases of consumption in WeUington at the present time is not altogether pleasant rea to the local community. Dr. Valentine (assistant chief health officer) made that fact known to the hospital trustees yesterday. He went on to say that of that number at least 30 were indigent cases, having no means of support, and they were in several cases sharing rooms with other persons in some of the smaller houses of the city. It was this latter class of eases, he pointed out. for which accommodation was pirtieularly required. The accommodation required was of two classes. U'.ose for whom there was no possible cure, and those who had a fair chance oi ultimate recovery. The latter required accommodation more in the nature or an annexe for the open-air treat merit. He suggested an appeal should be made to the public for subscriptions towards the erection of accommodation If there was not a ready response on the part of the public to" the appeal the trustees would be justified in undertaking the more urgent expenditure, but he had every reason to believe from consultations that he had had wit: persons in the city that there would tr a ready response to the apDeal T'-e trustees accorded sympathetic support to the suggestion made by Dr Valentine. It was decided to convene a public meetmg at an early date to submit the question to the public.
