NEW QUEEN STREET WHARF.
■;.'; l.i. .... m. .'." WORK DELAYED BY MARINE DEPARTMENT. PLANS REQUIRE REVISION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. With reference to the 'discussion by the Auckland Harbour Board on the subject of the new Queen-street wharf, I made inquiries from the Marine Department, the officials of which state that it would be inadvisable to approve of the plans of the wharf until they are satisfied that provision has been made for means of access to the structure from the street. The plans submitted by the Harbour Board did not show facilities in the direction indicated. The Department states whenever plans of harbour works are submitted for its approval, the opinion of the marine engineer is obtained, his duty being to point out defects which may exist, and where alterations are necessary. This course will be followed in the case of Queen-street wharf. After the chairman saw the Department in Wellington recently the marine engineer again went through the plans, and was satisfied that matters to which the Hoard's attention had been drawn were as stated in his letter to the Board. The Minister for Marine says his desire is to facilitate the work of the Board, but where there is an omission, as there appears to be in this ease,, it is the duty of the Department to direct the attention of the Board thereto.
