TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
The director of technical Instruction (Mr G. George), conferring with the Education Board to-day, stated that of the £1073 applied for by the Board for the erection and equipment of a manual training school ' at the Thames, the Government had granted £500 for building and £IS2 for equipment. He "had recommended the Thames people to endeavour to collect £100, which would carry a subsidy of £100, and the matter had been earnestly taken np. Mr A. Myers had offered a site near the Kauaeranga school. It was decided to call for tenders for the erection of the school, and to engage in England a woodwork instructor at a salary of £200 a year, and a cookery instructor at £160. The secretary reported that no reply had been received from the Department to the application for £1000 for a technical school at Whangarei, and the matter wae deferred. It was decided that an additional teacher for art and handwork should be obtained for the ountr ydistrits. This insiruteion had. the director stated, proved very valuable In town, and the present Instructor c<nild not be spared to vieit the country svhoolL. ftesarding the farriery class it was agreed to engage Mr Lyons, Government veterin- I ary surgeon, He lecturer, and also to engase •an instructor fdr practical work. The hon. superintendent of the Thames tehui«U and continuation classes, reporting on the school, stated that the anring the two terms totalled 16.837. Of the 65 students examined 40 passed. 12 gaining first-class certificates, and 28 second class. Tbe receipts totalled £140 19/3, afid , the expenditure left :i credit of £1 17/5 The total enrolments were 344, of which 19 were in arithmetic, 28 practical mathematics, 48 in typewriting, 78 bookkeeping, 101 KußHeh literature and commercial correspondence.
