MONEY GALORE.
m (Continued from page five.) Witness said further that they continued to drive along the road, and Anderson seized him by the throat, while Barrett thrust a hand into witness' trousers' pocket, where he had money. The next thing he recollected was the stopping of the cab and the appearance of a policeman at the cab doors. The driver had climbed down and bolted. Previously to this the cabman, Anderson, had demanded his fare, telling him he was at Onehunga. Witness saw that he was only at the Captain Cook Hotel, and he told the cabman to go and collect from the man who engaged him. During the drive the cab occasionally stopped at hotels, and the men plied him with drink. When the constable appeared witness was sitting in the cab with Bar- | rett. Witness told the constable that he had been throttled and robbed. The constable searched him. and found 17/9 in his pocket. He told witness to get back into tJtt cab with Barrett, and ordered Mack to drive to an hotel which he named, the policeman following on horseback. During this drive Barrett put some money into his waistcoat pocket, telling him not to squeal, but to mix it with his other money. They then proceeded to the police station at Auckland, and witness there informed the constable of what Barrett had done. The policeman found 18/3 in the waistcoat pocket, and the former 17/9 still in the trousers' pocket. The policeman had previously searched all his pockets. To Mr Lundon: His reason for giving the hotel porter the odd sum of £9 18/ was that witness promised to shout for the household, and also had a bottle of champagne himself. (Proceeding.)
