FIRE ON THE MURITAI.
15 HEAD OF CATTLE AND 2 HORSIS SMOTHERED. FLAX CARGO DESTROYED. About ten o'clock last night when the Northern Co.'s s.s. Muritai was abreast of Kaipara, bound from Hokianga to Onehunga. a fire was discovered in On forehold by one of the sailors, who immediately reported it to Captain Stephenson. The fire hose was quickly brought Into requisition, and two heads soon got the fire under. The Muritai carried a quantity of dressed flax in bales, besides 15 head of cattle and one mare and foal in the forehold. The cattle and the mare and foal were smothered before they could be released, while the flax was" found on examination to have been totally destaJved. i Mr W. Laird, the company's superintending engineer, and Mr Melville, foreman ship's carpenter, made a survey of - the vessel this morning, and found tie damage to be slight, and the necessary repairs will be completed this afternoon. The origin of the fire is unknown, tat the general opinion is that it was the result of spontaneous combustion.
