The Council mot at 6 o'clock last ovening. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Stevenson, Burns, Kkld, Masefield, Waymouth, Goldie, Crowther, Aickin, Atkm, Montague, Dignan, Devore, Cooper, Evans, Laßocho, Phillippa, and Claike.
New Member.-Cr. J. P. Clarke, the newly-elected member for Grafton Ward, was introduced by Cr. Laßoche, made the usual declaration, and took his seat. _ Correspondenoe. —Letters were received: From W. L. Malcolmson re bad lighting of Picton-street: Referred to Streets Committee.—From Nelson, Moate, and Co., JL. A Crawford, and James Laing, asking to be placed on the burgess roll: Granted.- From F. J. Yon Stunner, forwarding copy of petition in favour of Mr Vailo's railway reform aoheme.andaekingtheMayorandCouncillors ioappond their signatures : Ordered to ho on the table.-From John Marshall, asking permission to close a right-of-way in Short-land-streot, as it was used as a urinal: Referred to Streets Committee—From U. I. Williams, pointing out tho merits of Deacon's water meter : Referred to Streets Committee.—From G. P. Blaikie, asking the Council to give his patent plaster a trial: Referred to tho Engineer.—From W. S. Cochrane, Secretary to the Diocesan Board, a3king the Council to erect the cemetery wall on tho portion of tho Anglican cemetery fronting Symonds-street: Referred to the Streets Committee.- From tho Railwuy Traffic Manager, stating that the Government would be willing to tun a daily funeral train to the Waikomiti cemetery for £1,500 per annum : Referred to the Legal Committee. — From the Aev. J. Robertson, asking that tho portion of the Waikomiti cemetery reserved for the burial of persons of the Congregational denomination be handed over to the trustees appointed by that body : Referred to' the Legal Committee.— From Rev, W. Tebbs, respecting the cemetery fees. Ho oxplained that there had been no reference in his former letter to any charge except tkat for digging graves ; and on behalf of the combined religious bodies in Auckland representing the whole religious community in the city, requested that only the cost of digging a grave should be paid when there was no ground required : Referred to the Legal Committee. Petitions - Cr. Burns presented a petition from the residents of Licbfield-street, asking that that street be drained into Gundry-street: Referred to Streets Committee. — Cr. Devore presented a petition from residents of Curran-streetand Sarsfield Road, asking that a swamp be drained : Referred to Streets Committee.- Councillor Goldie presented a petition from the residents of Lower Hepburn - street, re impateable state of that thoroughfare : Referred to Streets Committee.-Councillor Phillipps presented a petition from the residents of Ligar Pltce, Grafton Ward, asking that the footpath be kerbed and channelled : Referred lo Streets Committee.
Northern Hotel. —Mr Curnow, licensee of the Northern Hotel, wrote asking that the term of lease might be extended until the Council wero ready to put the property in the market: Received. Streets Committke. —Cr. J. P. Clarke's name was added to the Streets Committee.
Tenders.—The tender of J. Hill, £112 4s Sd, waa accepted for levelling reserve. FrozeJf Meit Co. — A communication from this Company re rates was referred to the Finance Committee. Grafton Road.—The two lowest tenders for works in this street were referred to the Engineer to report. Cemetery By-laws.—The cemetery bylawß were confirmed.
