PORT CHALMERS.
(From our own Correspondent.)
This day,
The Captains' Protest. The judgment delivered at the Dunedin Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, in the case of the barque Cora Lino, has excited the alarm of the masters of vessels discharging at the railway pier, and they resolve not to land more cargo until the question of responsibility of the railway receiving it for conveyance to Dunedin is placed beyond doubt. Masters demand that the railway shall admit the responsibility, and the question is now under the consideration of the Executive, and will be decided to-day. If you have not heard of the Cora Linn case, I may state that she delivered certain goods to the railway authorities, and received a clean receipt for them. The goods were delivered to the consignees, Scanlan and Co., and retained by them for some days, then returned to the railway as damaged goods, and the ship was sued for their value, and lost the case : the Court tuling the clean receipt of no account, because it was not shewn that the railway was the authorised agent of the consignees. There is great excitement in consequence, and all discharging is stopped. It is probable that the railway will accept the responsibility ; if not, ships will haul into the stream, and lighter cargo. Arrived : Wellington from the North, with a steam launch for the Government all right. It is thought to be a nice vessel, but the plates are regarded as rather light.
