LAST NIGHT'S BUSINESS, Various Bills.
The House of Representatives during the evening sitting was entirely engaged in committee. The Bills passed were:—The Southland Wastle Lands Act, 1865, Amendment Bill, the Napier Wzterworks Loan Bill, New River Harbour Board Land Bill, lnvercargill Gas Loan Act, 1874, Amendment Bill, Wel- , lington Harbour Reserve Bill, Wellington I Market Reserve Sale Bill, Inspection of Machinery Bill. \ Second Readings. — Westland Waste ■anda Acts Amendment Bill, Palmeraton
Waterworks Bill, Auckland Institute Bill, Auckland City Endowment and Licenses Bill. Campbelltown Athenaaum Bill, Nelson City Loan Bill, Ann Bood Grant Bill. Deceased. Wife's Sister Bill Passed. On goiDg into committee on the Deceased Wife's Sisters Bill, Pearce moved that the Chairman leave tbe chair. Mr Geo. McLean protested against trying to shelve the Bill, the principle of which had been three times affirmed by the House and had become law in nearly every Australasian colony. A division was called for, the result being twenty-six in favour of going into committee, and six against. Mr O'Rorke moved that the third reading of the Bill be postponed till Wednesday, but was negatived on the voices, and the Bill was read a third time, and passed. There were seventeen pair?. Mr Cuthberson, who called for division, did so, as he stated, to expose the surprise attempted, and, although he voted for leaving the chair, he was a supporter of the Bill.
The House adjourned at 10.30.
