PORT CHALMERS.

"ti Correspondent.) ~ J This day. VOL. Quarantine Island.

The barracKßTtately erected at Quarantine Island, No. 2, for the use of single men immigrants, narrowly escaped destruction by fire last evening. A quantity of old bedding and clothes were discovered on fire close to the building, and if left half-an-hour longer the building must h?ve caught and, as no one was in charge of it, would have been destroyed. The island is out of the way, only to be reached by a long pull from Port Chalmers. Incendiarism is strongly suspected.
