LATEST SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.
WELLINGTON.
{From cur own Correspondent.) This day. A Younjg Seaman Missing. t ;j A young seartfan named Scott left the ship a |ew nights ago in a mysterious jSamjer^ li*ypearc the youth waß well-con-nepted at home, and his father sent out for him, telling him to come home and where to apply for the where-withal. He asked the captain for his discharge, which was refused. That night he disappeared, and next morning an oar and ship's rudder were found on the te«d!h. The sailor has not been seen since, A bafc.it is pretty well known that he is lj in£ perdu till the vessel leaves. Decline in the Demand for Coastirg
Judging by the signs of the times, coasting ei»ft,i{,6uch as brigantines, brigs, and schooners, bid fair to be at a discount sharUy; Several new coasting steamers have been introduced here lately, and several HWre a*e to be here shortly, besides less <»ks*'which are to be ordered from home. •Kb fewer than four are at present destined to nra"- between Wellington and Napier, bat as that is more than there is any /trade for, some of them will haj«e'' i to go into competition on 8om« -«wef' stretch of coast. Live freight is coming S»wii s6 low now that the regular coasters tetwtfip Bunedin, Lyttelton and Wellington that have been in that trade for years, are now compelled to draw off. The Newcastle colliers are cow doing the bulk of that business, as it pays them when it would not pay the regular trader. The collier discharges coals at Lyttelton, then takes in grain for Wellington or elsewhere, and after discharging it proceeds on her voyage for more coals. The Canterbury, schooner, was put up the other day, and there waß a reserve ef only £500 upon her, but as none of the bids approached it, she was withdrawn from Bale. A lot more will soon be in the market. The'Hawea and Taupo are such capacious carriers that they seldom go away quite full, and never have to refuse cargo. It is stated that the N.Z.S.S. Co. is making overtures to them to amalgamate, but the effort is not expected to be successful. The Little Steam Launch Condemned. The little steam launch recently built at Auckland for Wellington harbour, for the conveyance of immigrants between Soames' Island and the city, is a pretty little toy, and would answer well for the silver streets of Venice, but she is no earthly use for Wellington. She does not appear to be able to carry more than half-a-dozen statute adults forward of the engine, for if they stood aft wliere they ought to do, their weight wtrald put her stern flush with the water. H ever she ventures out in a rough breeze she must go down for a certainty. She carries just water enough for steaming between the island and the city and back, and should she be impeded by heavy weather she will only have enough for half the trip. She is conBidered a Waste of public money.
