Deceased Wife's Sister.
In the House to-day, Mr O'Neill's notices of motion was given as notified. Mr Steward gave notice for Tuesday to ask leave to introduce a Bill to legalise marriage with deceased wife's sister. (Great laughter.) Sir George Grey presented a petition from early settlers praying for an investigation of tbe case, and such relief as the House deemed right. The petition was read. Mr Karatana presented a petition from certain natives of Hawke's Bay, praying the House to protect their interests in the Patutahi block. Major Atkinson laid on the table a statement of receipts by the province or Welling-' ton from the Manawatu district. Immediately, Mr Bunny asked leave also to lay on the table tne return of expenditure by the province on that district, showing that£l22,ooohadbeen expended, and £14,000 voted on the last estimates against £100,000 received during the last nine years. jpg Fitzherbert Skinning Johnson. Mr. Fitzherbert is speaking in support of Mr. Bunny. He is skinning Johnson, who, in asking for returns of the receipts of the Manawatu block, swallowed up by the provinces, said it had been described in the papers as having driven a nail into the Provincial coffin. Johnson had said that the money might as well be given to the Emperor of China. The House is in. roars. The flaying is awful.
