PROTECTIONIST AGITATION.
AEEIVAL OF THE SUEZ MAIL.
Melbourne, July 21. The Budget was at first favourably received, but now the Protectionists have formed a league against the reduction of duties, and the manufacturers are also in arms on the grounds of interference with existing rights, and publicans even find the operations of the tariff to be prejudical to their trade, especially the house tax. Not one section is apparently satisfied, and the Government proposals are likely, if passed at all, to be severely handled.—The scandal anent Judge Dunne culminated in his suspension by tne Government—not, as stated, on the ground of alleged intoxication, but for on Monday having neglected to open the Insolvency Court at Sandhurst at the proper time. It is evident the Government felt the necessity of doing something.—The steamship Somersetshire has arrived, 54^ days from London. — At a meeting yesterday it was resolved to form a Colonisation and Trading Company for New Guinea, capital £50.000.—H.M.5. Blanche is shortly going to England via Cape Horn. — Bishop Hall, of Western Australia, has been elected Bishop of Brisbane. —The mail has just been telegraphed at Adelaide. It arrives here on Friday, the 23rd. Sydney, July 21.
The Macgregor has reached San Francisco, but the date is not given.- Hsnley Bennett, a member of the Assembly, who was incarcerated during the term of an unsatisfied judgment, has been released, the Attorney. General expressing his opinion that members enjoyed ihe same immunity from arrest as the House of Commons members. —A charge of alleged corruption against the Minister of Lands, after- an excited debate, ended in nothing.—The Leparito from Naw York reports rescuing the crew of the barque Hesperus bound, to Monte Video, who had lived three days in the mizen-top and rigging.—The ship Isabella, bound from Newcastle to Hong Kong, was wrecked on a reef, and the boats' crew picked up six men, which were left on the island without provisions.—The Valetta, colt, and Hyperion are first favorites for the Derby. Adelaide, July 21.
A company has been floated in London for the construction of extensive breakwater works and wharf accommodation near the pemapnore. Capital, a quarter of a million ; all subscribed. Initial steps have been taken.
