DEVONPORT RATEPAYERS' MEETING
The ratepayers of the Devonport Highway District held their annual meeting last evening, in the Devonport Hall, Mr. William Atkin in the chair. After a few remarks from the chairman, Mr. Cochrane read the balance sheet of the board, which shewed the amounts of income and expenditure for the past year. Receipts: To rates collected, £238 12s; amount received from Colonial Government, £69 8s ; from Provincial Government, £20 ; ditto in aid of forest planting, £50 ; Impounding Act, £45 9s 6d ; Thistle Act, £2 : total, £4259a6d. Expenditure: By forming roads, £77 14s ; metalling and channelling. £195 5s 4d ; bridges and culverts, £31 14s 6d; commission for collecting rates, £11 15s lOd ; printing and advertising, £19 16s 6d ; planting forest trees, £71 Us; miscellaneous expenditure, £28 15s : total, £436 12s 2d. Amount of rates payable for the year, £233 4s 2d; amount actually received, £225 15s 8d; amount of arrears of past rate, £94 14s lid. Mr. Cochrane moved and Mr. Mays seconded the adoption of the report, which- was carried
unanimously. After some discussion on the planting of trees and the condition of district roads, in which Messrs. Marshall, Niccoland Mays took part, Mr. Brown proposed and Mr Duder seconded, "That the rate be Id in the £1, on the value to sell." Agreed to. The following gentlemen were then nominated as trustees : Messrs. Cochrane, 154; 0. Mays, 152 ; Trevarthen, 152; Brown, 149; McEwen, 87; and G. Brassey, 79. The first five gentlemen were declared duly elected. Messrs. Geo. Sibbin and R. Duder were elected auditors, and Messr3. Geo. Rust and Cobley, fence-viewers. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting.
