NAVAL TRAINING SCHOOL.

(To the Editor of theEvENiNG Star). Sir, —I see Constable Newton captured three more runaways yesterday. Now, sir, I have every respect for those in charge, but I must raise my voice in favour of the poor little wretches who have appeared on several occasions in the Court, and have been sent back to what seems to them, purgatory and and a whipping. There must be something wrong when it is of such frequent occurrence to see children pulled up before our Courts for desertion. When a boy, I know flogging made- me obstinate and stupid, but a far greater punishment was to.be sent to bed supperless an hour or two before my schoolmates, or to have my play hours curtailed. I donofcaccusethegentleman in charge as being wittingly unkind. He has only to carry out the law and his instructions ; but in sending the poor littie waifs and strays back after desertion to a whipping is cruel in the extreme. A kind word and kind treatment, I feel confident, would be preferable, and we would not be bothered again in reading o such desertions.—Yours truly, City Arab.
