CHRISTCHURCH.
(From our own Correspondent.) This day. Remarkable Action for Slander.
A case to-day in the Supreme Court nisi prius, excited much interest. Ihe plaintiff, Joseph Newman, a seed-merchant, and com paratively new arrival from England, and a very poshing energetic business man, sued William Wilson (more familiarly known for many years as " Cabbage Wilson") for £5000 damages for Blander. It was alleged that the defendant said at a public dinner-table that the plaintiff "Would be bankrupt in three months" Hence the action. Much amusement was caused by the production of an epistle written by the plaintiff intended for publication in the Otago Daily Times, but not published by them, in which the defendant's history was alluded to, and he was termed a barrowman costermonger in the olden days, but now one of Christchurch'B nobocracy. Sundry allusions more pertinent than respectful to the various members of defendant's family also caused much merriment in Court. The judge directed the jury that a verdict must be for plaintiff. After retiring for three-quarters of an hour, the jury returned with a verdict of otc farthing damages.
Mr. Maskell, Provincial Secretary,, addressed his constituents last night. The weather is bitterly cold and very frosty.
