(Per Press Telegram Agency.) Wednesday. Testimonial to Sir M. Montefiore At a meeting of the Jewish congregation on Sunday last, £80 was raised towards a testimonial to Sir Moses Montefiore, originated in London, and a committee was appointed to obtain a further subscription from Jews and Christians.
Shipping Company. At a special meeting of the New Zealand Shipping Company this afternoon, it; was resolved to empower the directors to borrow money by issue of debentures or otherwise, with or without security. The Chairman of the Board of Directors said the debit balance of £14,000 which existed on the profit and loss account at the local annual meeting, had entirely disappeared ; and the capital of the company was returned in stock. Five ships had been ordered, and he believed they would be completed during the current year. They were being built on the most approved
principle?. Since tne last annualmeeting the operations of the company had been ver| m<" rs'fnl, and especially so at the Bluff and ■uuruuiu. Ihe director?, in view of increasing tho business of the company, had reBolvßd to make a call of £2 10s on the capital: -0. on the 14th of Avgaxt, 20s on the Ist of Uctober, and 10d on l\ovtmber 14, allowing b per cent, rebate on advanced payment.
