A meeting of the ratepayer! of the Newton district was held last evening in Jeune's Ball of Progress, East-streeJ^ Newton, for the I purpose of considering matters of local importance. Mr J7&. He must say that Mr Jeune had acted properly in calling the meeting together for discussing matters of local interest—Sergeant-Major Haslem expressed himself in favor of the trustees, who had done their part well, and had improved the district consi* derably j* the workjmost needed had been done in the district.—Mr. Wilkes said, in respect of the streets of Newton, that the ratepayers had petitioned the Board, but had been told by tbat body that they must put their hands in lleir pockets and do the work themselves. He named one street that had remained in a dangerous and unsafe condition for six years ;j the street was in a most disgraceful state, and should receive prompt attention as:it was the entrance into the district.—After some further discussion, without any resolution being passed, the meeting closed with votes of thanks to Mr Jeune and the Chairman.
