■ (Per Press Telegram Agency.) This day. The San Francisco Mail Contract

The following cablegram received by the Sydney Government has been transmitted per Hero to the New Zealand Government : "London, JuD*e 25. "The mail contract is signed. The contract is with the American Pacific Company, Mr Elder, of Glasgow, and Mr Macgregor, of Leith, jointly and severally. The services to be under the printed conditions sent you. The term is for eight years, each colony "paying half. The speed eleven knots, and the subsidy £89,850. The service begins in November next from Sydney and Port Chalmers, and continues once every four weeks. The boats for San Francisco sail from Port Chalmers and the boats from San Francisco through to Sydney, connecting at Kji. The boat from Sydney to Viji meets the boat from San Francisco and carries the nails to New Zealand ports, this boat being the next through boat from Port Chalmers to Sin Francisco, returning thence to Sydney, Md so on. Mr Elder supplies two a«w ships, and the American Compsny three new ships-; all upwards of 2,800 tons, built, of iron with Bcrew propellers of great power. There is no doubt of the ability of the contrattors. The contract a,forwarded by the outgoing mail, and requires confirmation during the present session of Parliament. Send the New Zealand Government a copy of the printed condition, bond and contract, and this contract. The cable agreement is Bigned by Sir Julius Vogel and Sir Charles Cowper, and awaits th» seal of the colony to complete it. Signed, Cowper, Russell."
