McEWENS GIGANTIC FAILURE.
TEE MELBOURNE ARGUS ON SIR GEORGE GREY.
(SPECIAL TO THE STAB.) MELBOURNE. June McEwan's liabilities are~£B6,9oo, of which £69 900 are due the Colonial Bank, which holds securities for £11,900, leaving £57,900 unsecured. Tbe assets are £41,606, leaving a deficiency of £45,300, or ten shillings in the pound. At the meeting of creditors Mr Greenlaw, manager of the Colonial Bank, refused to give particulars, therefore the estate will be sequestered. It is a severe blow to the bank. . Letters from the Palmer state the diggings < are no good, and there is much distress. Barrett, the wife-murderer, will probably be reprieved. The Melbourne Argus has a severe article against Sir George Grey. At Sandhurst, Father Kelly said-it was necessary to prepare for a great war m the Church, and to see that Catholic children got religious instruction. Judge Dunne has sent a lengthy letter to the GoVernment, denying the charge of intoxication while on the Bench. He says he took chlorodyne, and the accusation is a vile slander.
[PER BRIG SYREN.] By the brig Syren, Captain Sainty, which arrived in harbour today, we have files of Sydney papers to the 16th inst. There is little newa in addition to the full telegrams we have already published. We make the following extracts : — MELBOURNE. In a civil ejectment case, the Judge committed a woman named Catherine Lynch for perjury, in having svtorn that a will produced was her husband's. A nugset of solid gold, weighing 108 oz., was found in the New Lothair mine, at Clunes. 'i he population of the colony at the end of March was 810,000, showing an increase of 1900 souls on the quarter, The whole country in the neighbourhood of Sandhurst is inundated for miles around. Great damage will be done to the crops. The Durham's home passage occupied 56 days. The Victoria Sugar Company have made arrangements* to send borne a manager by this mail to obtain the most improved machinery. A numerously attended meeting of Irishmen was held last night, when it was resolved to celebrate the O'Connell centenary on the 6th of Ancust.
A fire has occurred at Smith's grocery store at Prahran. It was insured for £1300 in the Queen, the National, and the Northern offices.
The P. and 0. Company's steamer Nubia took G9,9G3 ounces of gold, 144,479 sovereigns, and a number of passengers. The Chinaman Hock Kirn. charged with the manslaughter of a child by a blow intended for another, has been acquitted at the Criminal Sessions in the face of the Judge's direction.
