June 15. Two days' sale of pictures in London realised £100,000. Dover is about to]be madera fortified harbour.
Captain Markbam, of the Arctic Expedition, was presented to the Queen on her Majesty's Birthday. A. meeting was held, presided over by Mr Disraeli, to take steps for the erection of a monument to Lord Byron. Mr Warner the secretary of the Sim Building Society, has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzling £35,000. The Lord Mayor of London is to visit Dublin in June, on the occasion of an Irish banquet to American riflemen. It will be the first Mayoral State visit this century. Lord Coleridge, Chief Justice of Common Pleas, has issued a refutation of the charges brought against the Judges who tried the Tichbo ne Claimant. Mr J, Cowen, member for Newcastle-on-Tyne, has tabled a notice of motion condemnatory of proceedings in reference to the trial of the Guikowar of Baroda.
