WELLINGTON.
(From our own Correspondent.) This day. Civil Servant Charged with Cruelty.
A curious case is before the Resident Magistrate today. The police summoned a civil servant for ill-treating a horse. Some of the witnesses said the horse had been in a piece of ground (100 by 40ft.) for ten or twelve days without any food. The horse was described as a mere bag of bones, and not fit for cata'-meat. Another witness described the animal as a lot of bones tied up in a sack. The only food in the enclosure had been a few docks and stumps of weeds. The charge was dismissed because the information was laid under a wrong clause.
Railway Agitation. An endeavour is being made to get up an agitation in the Wairarapa district for railway extension, under the idea that the present juncture is a favourable one; that the present session is the last one ; and that the next Government will be opposed to railway extension altogether. Standard Insurance. Stevenson and Stuart report a growing demand for Standard Insurance shares, as compared with any other insurance shares. Union Company. Levin and Co. have been appointed agents for the Union Company's new steamers Hawea and Taupo. Theatrical. Dr. Carr keeps up feeling bumps and bumpkins, and practising all sorts of mesmeric feats. Miss Flora Anstead arrived by the Alhambra. She joins the Hoskins' Company. Fearful Accident. A strong W. gale was blowing all Saturday. The only accident was a man's hat blew away.
