Lonton, May 28. Mr Froude has returned from his South African tour, in bis official capacity. The Oaks Stakes, 50 sovereigns,half forfeit, 136 subscribers, was run to-day, with the following result:— Lord Falmouth's b f Spinaway by Maccarom - Queen Bertha, 1 ; Lord Falmouth's chf Ladylove by Blair Athol, 2 ; General Peel's b f sister to Musket by Toxopholite—West Anstralian, 3. The newly-organised Arctic expedition sails to-morrow.

Captain Boy ton has again crossed the Channel in the dress which he has invented for the preservation of life at sea. He left Calais next day, re-crossed the Channel, and reached Dover in 24 hours. He was but slightly distressed. Mr Vogel, of New Zealand, has been created a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Commodore Goodenough and Mr Layard receive the position of Companions of St. Michael and St. George. Messrs Holland, Hackett, Sargeauut, and Havelock have been appointed members of the Legislative Council of Fiji. The strike of colliers in South Wales terminated by the men consenting to reduced wages of 12! per cent. Wool sales are proceeding briskly ; prices firm. June 1. In the House of Lords Earl Derby, Minister for Foreign Affairs, in reply to an inquiry from Lord John Russell, stated that Germany had recently delared that she might be forced to strike the first blow in another war, in consequence of the extensive armaments the French nation were organising. Earl Derby further stated that, through the inteiventtou of England and Russia the dauger of another outbreak of war had been for the time averted. The Plymouth and Aberdare Iron Company has suspended payment, which involves not only minor failures but a large firm of discount brokers. The failures were anticipated. June 2. President Grant has refused to become a candidate for the third term of the Presidency of the United States. Singapore, May 30. The steamer Normanby, via Torres' Straits, left Singapore to-day, two days before contract time.
