Sydney, June 5, noon,
Agifcatipn continues in favour of the cnnexation of New Guinea by Great Britain. The barque Cheverfr, on a scientific exploring expedition to New Guinea, arrived at Towns, ville ; all'well. A small pioneer expedition from Sydney is also talked of. The commissioners appointed by our Government to make arrangements for the representation of the colony in the Phiia ielphia and Melbourne exhibition are working zealously to secure the proper representation of New South Wales.
Political news of the month is not very important. The Robertson Ministry are pressing on works of a re-productive character, including the extension of the railway into the heart of the city. Sir Alexander Gordon, Governor of Fiji, will leave hence iv a day or two for L.-vuka in H M.S. Pearl, and will be followed by tho Barracouta with his Excellency's staff and family.
Commercial affairs are imprpving.
Macquarie, the shipbuilders, and a man named Budge have been convicted of endangering the life of a bailiff of the Bank of New South Wales by sending him' adrift in a steam launch, alone, and with full steam on. They were fiaed £40 each, and sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
Frank Hewitt, the English champion runner, has challenged Robert Watsan, of Scone, to run three races on the Albert Ground, Sydney 100. 120, and 130 yards— for £150 a side, the winner o? two out of the three events to take the stakes.
Iv anticipation of the action of the Government here, tenders have been invited in London, by Russell and Cooper, for permanent services, and tenders will also be invited here. Mr Webbs, ML. A., has given notice of a motion that the new service should be via Fiji and Honolulu, and that no contract should be accepted without the previous Banction and approval of the Assembly. . The Government has telegraphed Home to discontinue the services of Mr Shiel, Inspector of Railway Iron, in consequence of the unsatisfactory report of a Commission of Enquiry as to the rails already sent out. : A young man has been arrested on suspicion of having participated in the recent garotting case, by which a man was killed. Another case of garotte robbery is reported.
John Charles Ray, recently from Melbourne has been arrested here on a" Melbourne warrant, charged with misappropriating £1,000, trust money. ; Recent heavy rains threatened floods in Hunter and Hawkesbury districts. Fortunately at a critical time the weather cleared, and little damage was done. Arrived : Mikado (2nd June,) Easby (4th June.) Sailed : (June 2nd,) Rhoderick Dhu for Auckland.
