.Singular Fire. There has been a fire at Welshman's Gully, under peculiar circumstances. On the 4th, Jones the proprietor of the Welsh Harp Hotel and store, left the in charge of a carter named Brown, who was with two servants in the room, behind the bar, where some one called out fire ! On going outside they found the corner stone on fire, which they succeed in putting out. At 1 o'clock in the morning, some hours after, all the inmates having retired, the men were aroused by a noise on the roof of their store, which they discovered to be on fire. The buildings were burned to the ground, the inmates of the hotel having barely time to escape. Jones's account is that he .went away for a cmarter of an hour to see his father who is ill, and on returning was informed of the fire in the stable, which he visited several times betweeen 11 and 1, but saw no signs of fire. The building was insured in the New Zealand for £1000. An open verdict was returned at the inquest.
