CITY COUNCIL.—THIS DAY.
The usual. fcstnightly meeting of the Cily Council was held this afternoon. Present— The Mayor (presiding), and Councillors Macready, Holdship, Buchanan, Daldy, Brett, and Hurst.
SPECIAL BATE. —INVESTMENT.
A letter relative to the investment of the special rate was read as follows :—" Wellingeon, May 28, —Sir, —l have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your'letter of the 3rd May, forwarding, at my request information relative to the proposed investment by the City Council of Auckland of £2,250, in conformity with clause 253 of the Municipal Corporation Act 1867, and in reply to inform you that His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to approve the investment of the amount in the terms quoted in your letter now under acknowledgment.—l have, etc., Daniel Pollen. To his Worship the Mayor." It was stated that the terms referred to was that the money should be invested on mortgages, approved by the Mayor and two members of the Finance Committee.
FINANCE.
The following amounts were ordered to be paid :—General account, £222 19s Id; city endowment, £284 : waterworks, £6 15s lid. Total, £513 15s lOd. Statement of fundsGeneral account: to balance, £440 Is lOd ; by accounts to be paid as above, £222 19s lid. Total, £663 Is 9d. City Endowments Account — Balance, £251 2s 8d ; accounttsto pay, £284. Dr., balance £22 17s. 4d. Upon this account there was a fixed deposit of £2500. Special Rate Account—Cr., £773 12s sd. Interest due 10th July, £600 Waterworks Account—Balance, Dr., £1262 lis 3d ; accounts to pay, £6 15s lid. Total, £1269 7s 2d. Return of rates, etc. r collected from Ist to I2th June, £280. KEROSENE STOBAGE. An application was received from Messrs. Owen and Graham for permission to store I-drosotic The City Surveyor could not recommend the storage of kerosene in such a central position. . It was resolved that the application cannot be acceded to. STREET TRAMWAYS. The Town Clerk of Sydney forwarded a Bill introduced in New South Wales Parliament for the" construction of Btreet tramways in Sydney, with the report of a select committee thereon. The Bill was withdrawn by the mover, and there are now no street tramin Sydney. * . - Councillor Hurst stated that Mr Turner, a son of an old colonist, and a member of an eminent legal'firm there, was in Auckland, and had expressed his willingness to give information respecting the astonishing results of street tramways in San FranclflCO. Sgltß was resolved that Mr Turnerjjbe requested, if convenient, to wait on the Council to-morrow weekBREAKWATER ROAD. The Streets Committee recommended that the Council contribute an amount towards the formation of the Breakwater Road only equal to the amount of rates collected from it. . , After a considerable discußßion, ana an amendment that the Council contribute onehalf, the report waa adopted without alteration. I<>r i Buchanan, Hurst, Macready, and Cosgrave. SLATJGHTEBHOirjSE. On the motion of Councillor Macready. the proposal to erect a Slaughterhouse at Low and Motion's creek was adopted, and a co remittee was appointed to arrange for carrying it out.
