THE RUMOURED PURCHASE OF THE HERO.

Is"; reference to the rumour that the A.S.P. Co. are in negotiation for the purchase of the s.s. Hero, we learn that the report is not well founded. Captain. Daldy informs us. that ,a 'conversation took place on board the Hero when Bhe was here last time, on the advantages which would be derived from such a purchase between Mr J. S. Macfarlane and Captain Logan. Neither of jthe gentlemen spoke under authority ; and we therefore hasten to state that there ißno ground for saying the Auckland Steam Packet Company contemplate any such transaction. The "Cross to-day most mendaciously states we gravely asserted that the Company had bought the steamer.: We did nothing of the kind as our readers are aware. We merely gave currency to a rumour which was actually credited in many quarters.
